Sydney, Australia – Wednesday, 12 October, 2011 (under total media embargo until 11.15am EDST): With just over six weeks until the 25th Anniversary ARIA Awards, the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) today announced the Nominees in all categories along with the details of the 2011 ARIA Awards to be staged at Allphones Arena, Sydney Olympic Park, on Sunday, 27 November, 2011.
This year’s nominations are an exciting mix of both new and established artists and set the scene for what will be a milestone celebration of 25 years of Australian music history. After a one year absence, the HIGHEST SELLING SINGLE and HIGHEST SELLING ALBUM categories make a welcome return as well as BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – SINGLE and BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – ALBUM (which were merged last year into one Breakthrough Artist category).

Im feeling really good and although I was only just getting the hang of raising boys when the universe threw me a curveball with a baby girl – I literally cannot wipe the smile off my face. Shano is absolutely over the moon of course and tal and arlo are overprotective and fussing over her already. Stay tuned and we’ll pop up a few of our fave snapshots this arvo. Kasey xxx

The new album is connected to the book ‘A little Bird Told Me’. I’ve picked my fave songs from my fave singer/songwriters who have influenced and inspired me throughout my life – and written about within the book – and done my own versions of the songs. Some are brand new releases and some are old recordings from years ago, but all are special to me in one way or another. There are duets with some of my favourite artists as well.

THE PLAYLIST

Lucinda Williams ‘Happy Woman Blues’: ‘It was such a moment for me, first seeing Lucinda play when I was 16. She was one part of a three-woman bill the others were Mary Chapin Carpenter and Rosanne Cash. I didn’t know of Lucinda before this night, but she struck me as so real, so honest, that she’s been a huge influence ever since. Through Lucinda’s song I discovered that it was OK to sing about really personal things, stuff that touched you deeply. I thought it was really good to record an earlier song of hers, one that hasn’t been recorded by a lot of people, a song that I knew really well. We used to sing this in the Dead Ringers.’

Gram Parsons ‘Return Of The Grievous Angel’: My dad and I have always related to each other through the music of Gram Parsons. Back in the days of the Dead Ringers I wrote a song called ‘Just like yesterday (song for Gram)’, where I sang: ‘And thanks to you, my father understands me.’ And it’s true. Gram’s music is something I grew up with; it was all around me, all the time, ever since I was a baby. It reminds me of growing up, of childhood.’

Townes Van Zandt ‘If I Needed You’ with Jimmy Barnes: ‘It’s a Townes Van Zandt song, and he’s one of my all-time favourite songwriters — the version recorded by Emmylou Harris and Don Williams is my pick. Emmylou has been a huge influence on me for longer than I can remember. Jimmy Barnes is a friend, who was kind enough to sing with me on this track. Singing with Barnesy – who wouldn’t want to do that!!

Suzanne Vega ‘Luka’: ‘I’ve always wanted to record it; it’s always been on my mind since I first heard it in the 1980s. I’ve always been fascinated by its contrasts: Luka has this beautiful melody matched to a dark and very hard-hitting topic.

Steve Earle ‘Nothing But A Child’ with the Lost Dogs: Steve was one of the more obvious choices for this album; his music has had a massive impact on me for such a long time. I first met him at Byron Bay, prior to playing at Bluesfest. He walked into the room, this big bear of a man, and offered me some chicken chips. I hate chicken chips, but who refuses Steve Earle? Not me.’

John Prine ‘Leave The Lights On’: ‘When we started our covers act, the Lost Dogs, we named ourselves after a John Prine album, Lost dogs and Mixed Blessings his music means that much to me. He’s another huge influence and the one act I must see before I die. Hasn’t happened yet, but I’m determined that one day I’ll see John Prine play.’

Hank Williams ‘I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry’ with Paul Kelly: ‘I think it’s probably the best country song ever written; it epitomises everything that’s ‘real’ country to me. When I first met Paul, I asked him who his favourite songwriters were. He said, ‘Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Hank Williams.’ I was shocked; I had Paul pegged as sort of a rock guy. I was so wrong.’

Matthew Ryan ‘Guilty’: ‘When our family group the Dead Ringer Band went to America for the first time, I saw Matthew play, purely by chance, at this Nashville venue called the Exit / Inn. Who is this guy, I wondered when he sauntered out on stage, his guitar slung low, rock star style. Then he started to sing, in that gravelly growl of his, and I was blown away, totally addicted. Guilty is one of the many Matthew Ryan songs I fell in love with on that night.’

Gillian Welch ‘Orphan Girl’ with Shane Nicholson: Like Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch is more of a recent influence. I love the way she sounds, that mountain vibe; it transports me to such an authentic place. It’s timeless, not just old-timey. I’ve recorded this with Shane, who’s not only my husband but my preferred singing partner of anyone in the world.’

Cyndi Lauper ‘True Colours’: ‘As a kid, I loved the way Cyndi Lauper sang and the songs she picked; I was more interested in that than the whole ‘quirky Cyndi’ thing. When I was 9, I made my public debut, singing one of Cyndi Lauper’s songs. My friend Caddie and I stood there in this little club in Southend, as still as statues, our eyes closed tight throughout the entire experience.’

Fred Eaglesmith ‘Water In The Fuel’: ‘My brother Nash and I used to sing this on stage as a duet. It takes a lot to get Nash on stage but this song is just so powerful, who could resist? Fred’s music was a huge influence on Barricades & Brickwalls. My Dad, my best friend Worm and I used to drive around in this beaten-up van, the three of us up the front and the gear in the back, and Fred on the stereo all the time. Fred’s a lovely, smart guy as I’ve come to learn, a lot less country than you’d think.’

Nanci Griffith ‘Wish It Would Rain’ with Ashleigh Dallas: ‘The first time I heard this song was by the beautiful singer ‘Jann Browne’. This song has lived with me forever and I’ve never tired of it. I’m singing it here with Ashleigh Dallas, an incredible young talent who’s been playing fiddle and singing in my band.

Paul Kelly ‘Everything’s Turning To White’: ‘If I could swap my career for that of one other person, it would be Paul Kelly. What’s not to love? Everyone knows his music and his songs, yet he’s not fussed over like some celebrity. I once did a duet with him at the Metro in Sydney and when he walked on the stage, the crowd’s response was so intense it was as though the roof was lifted off the place. Amazing. This my favourite Paul Kelly song — I’m totally convinced he becomes an old woman when he sings it.’

James McMurtry ‘Too Long In The Wasteland’: ‘I was appearing on an American radio program called Mountain Stage and James McMurtry was also on the bill. Both Nash and I were huge fans of this song and the album it came from, also called Too Long in the Wasteland. I’d just recorded a version of it, and had it with me. I went up to him backstage, introduced myself and said, ‘Mr McMurtry, I’ve just recorded a version of your song. I’m a huge fan.’ I handed him a copy. He looked at me and said, ‘Yeah, I’ve heard about that’ — and then he walked away! Not so impressed. Sometimes it’s best not to meet your heroes.’

Patty Griffin ‘Top Of The World’: ‘I was very pregnant with my second child, Arlo; at the time I was singing with our covers band called the Lost Dogs. I was running overdue with Arlo and got it into my head that if I sang this song, at the top of my lungs, maybe it would bring on the baby. As great as this song is, my plan didn’t work; it was a few more weeks before Arlo Ray was born. In a hospital, thankfully, not on stage.’

No point doing things by halves… Read the rest

Well i’m getting very excited about what’s coming up soon. I have my autobiography coming out, a new album coming out and my 3rd child coming out – (ha). All within about a month. No point doing things by halves huh

The book is the story of my life (good and bad) that i’ve spent the last 3 years writing with the help of my good friend Jeff Apter. It’s a very exposed, honest look into my life, from early childhood right up until now.

The new album is connected to the book aswell. I’ve picked my fave songs from my fave singer/songwriters who have influenced and inspired me throughout my life – and written about within the book - and done my own versions of the songs. Some are brand new releases and some are old recordings from years ago, but all are special to me in one way or another. There are duets with some of my favourite artists as well.

And my 3rd release will be the birth of my 3rd child in Oct. Talon and Arlo are very excited and still thinking of lots of names (they get to pick the middle name of the baby – at the moment their number 1 choice is Skeletor, so i hope they find something else!) We don’t know if we are having a girl or boy and will be happy with either of course – although ‘Skeletor’ for a girl may make her life a little hard.

Still got a few things on before and during all these releases – a few local gigs around the Central Coast/Hunter Valley. The Gympie Muster and a tour to North Queensland, so we hope to see some of you out on the road

A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME – KASEY CHAMBERS WITH JEFF APTER

One of Australia’s most beloved singer-songwriters, KASEY CHAMBERS may have won countless awards and sold more than a million albums, but she seems so down to earthmost Australians feel like they know her.

‘I think the only way to genuinely relate to people is to be true to yourself and about yourself.

This means revealing the good and the bad. I hope that someone reading thismight think ‘I know what that feels like’.

A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME is no traditional muso trip down memory lane or a conventional biography but a fearlessly honest memoir.Raised on the Nullarbor by their free-spirited parents, young Kasey Chambers and brother Nash would sometimes go for months without encountering another human being. Then, as The Dead Ringer Band, the family would perform in rough-and-tumble outback pubs, playing for little more than petrol money and sleeping in swags by the highwayunder the stars.

With her trademark down-to-earth honesty and humour, Kasey shares the highs and lows of her far from ordinary life, from her idyllic gypsy childhood to confronting thepersonal demons that threatened much more than her career. From the Australian outback to the world stage, A Little Bird Told Me is the moving, revealing and powerfulstory of a true original.

‘STORYBOOK’ – NEW ALBUM

‘I’ll be totally honest,’ admits Kasey Chambers, a woman who finds it hard to be anything but, ‘without the inspiration of a lot of the artists on ‘Storybook’, I probably wouldn’tbe making music today.

’With the impending release of her autobiography, ‘A Little Bird Told Me’, Kasey felt the time was also right to pay some dues to the artists that have shaped her own music.Hence this heartfelt set of faves and standards, Kasey’s very own personal mix tape.

‘It was exciting to be a human jukebox for this record,’ she confesses, ‘to get the chance to record the songs I love.

’One of the darkest songs to ever scale the pop charts, Suzanne Vega’s ‘Luka’ is the first single from ‘Storybook’ and has been a personal favourite of Kasey’s since she firstheard it on release in 1987.

Kasey says ‘I remember when Luka was on the radio, I heard it and fell in love with it, but wasn’t sure why. It’s a soft-sounding beautiful song with such a hard-hitting theme,To bring those vastly different elements together in a song is something that’s always amazed me about Luka.

’Kasey also works her magic on gutsy, soulful tunes hand-picked from the songbooks of Paul Kelly, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Fred Eaglesmith, Patty Griffin and manyothers. These are songs with a fair bit of grit in their grooves, populated by very real, very human characters.

Award for Best Country Work, great friends and beautiful people Angus and Julia Stone picking up Song and Songwriter of the Year, Paul Kelly with another awesome performance but without a doubt the biggest highlight of the night was Clare Bowditch doing an incredible performance of Little Bird. I have never been so chuffed in my life. I really thought I could be no more in love with Clare than I already was but now my girl crush has risen to new heights! She is the most beautiful lovely special lady in the industry and I feel lucky to call her a friend

I honestly can’t believe it. When I entered the International Songwriting competition I didn’t think I even had a chance being up against songwriters from all over the world,..I thought it would be fun to enter anyway. I’ve heard about the competition for a while but it’s the first time I’ve ever entered. What a buzz knowing that the judges were artists/songwriters such as Tom Waits, Ben Harper, Peter Gabriel and Rhianna. Winning with the song Beautiful Mess makes it even more special as its a song I wrote for my two boys Talon and Arlo. Guess I better buy them an icecream . Ha

ISC Grand Prize Is Awarded To Australian Artist Kasey Chambers For The Song “Beautiful Mess”

The International Songwriting Competition (ISC), the world’s preeminent global songwriting event, is pleased to announce its 2010 winners. ISC’s Grand Prize for 2010 is awarded to Australian native, Kasey Chambers, for her song “Beautiful Mess”, entered in the Folk/Singer-Songwriter category. Chambers also has the distinction of winning First Place in the Americana category for her song “Devil On Your Back” and Second Place in the Performance category for “Little Bird”.

Out of more than 15,000 entries, songwriters originating from Australia held a commanding presence in ISC with many First, Second and Third Place showings in their respective categories, including artists such as Basement Birds, Inland Sea, The Chemist, Washington, dirtgirl/dirtworld, Paul Dempsey, Jonah’s Road, Glen Richards, Children Collide, and many more. Of the 66 winners, 24% hail from Australia, making Australia the country with the most winners second to the USA. This achievement demonstrates the extraordinary talent coming from the Aussie music scene.

Called “the songwriting competition to take note of,” by the New York Times, ISC was established in 2002 and awards more than $150,000 in cash and prizes to amateur and professional songwriters around the globe. Winners are selected from over 15,000 songs submitted from 115 countries worldwide. Judges include iconic artists Peter Gabriel, Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, Jeff Beck, Robbie Williams, McCoy Tyner, Kelly Clarkson, Train, Michael W. Smith, Robert Smith (The Cure) and many more. In addition to the prolific artists included in the roster of judges for 2010, ISC boasts five record label presidents as well as other industry leaders offering songwriters the unprecedented opportunity to have their music heard by influential decision-makers. See below for the complete list of judges.

Kasey Chambers’ Grand Prize winning song, “Beautiful Mess,” features Missy Higgins on backing vocals and is the second single from the album, Little Bird. Chambers wrote the song for her two children because, as she says, parenting is often a “beautiful mess,” and her songwriting is an outlet by which she expresses her love to them.

Winning ISC is yet another accolade in an already successful and respected musical career. Hailing from a family of musicians, Kasey Chambers’ distinctive voice and impeccable songwriting have carved an indelible niche in the Country and Americana genres in Australia and beyond. The winner of countless ARIA, APRA, and CMMA awards, she has achieved the distinction of being the only Australian Country artist to have a #1 single and album on the charts in Australia simultaneously. Aside from her multi-platinum sales and Billboard success, she has toured with such legendary voices as Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, and more.

Candace Avery, the Founder and Director of ISC, says this of Chambers, “Kasey is that rare artist whose beautifully crafted songs cross over into such a wide variety of genres, including Country, Americana, Pop, Folk, and AAA. She has even put out an album of children’s music. But, it is the authenticity and sincerity of her music and lyrics that make her songs resonate so strongly with her fans – and also with the ISC judges. We are proud to have her as the 2010 ISC Grand Prize winner.”

OTHER PRIZES

“Lost Music Blues” has won an Honorable Mention in the Children’s Music category in the 2010 International Songwriting Competition.
“Christmas Time” has won an Honorable Mention in the Children’s Music category in the 2010 International Songwriting Competition.
“Little Bird” has won Second Place in the Performance category in the 2010 International Songwriting Competition.
